Calibrating Torque Wrenches, Transducers, Multipliers, Screwdrivers, Hydraulic, Mechanical and Pneumatic

All torque-type equipment requires calibration due to the demanding nature of how they are utilized. Each type of torque wrench, whether it is click, dial, hydraulic or powered, has unique load application features that must be routinely addressed.

A reputable laboratory such as Constellation PowerLabs, will perform torque wrench calibrations by conducting a set of laboratory procedures based on the type of unit under test (UUT) and its application. These protocols are fundamental to achieving consistently accurate fastener loads during the processes of manufacturing, assembling, and repairing hardware.

Wide Ranging Torque Wrench Calibrations & Capabilities

All standards used for hydraulic and torque wrenches are 17025 accredited. We provide all torque calibrations from 6 ozf-in to 6,500 lbf-ft in our standard laboratory as well as in our hot (radiological) lab.

Hydraulic Torque Wrench Calibrations

+ -

Constellation PowerLabs can calibrate hydraulic torque wrenches up to 20,000 lbf-ft (referenced to 10,000 psi pressure) in the standard lab. In our hot (radiological) lab, we can calibrate hydraulic torque wrenches up to 6,500 lbf-ft (referenced to 10,000 psi pressure) in the hot shop.

Pneumatic (Air Guns) Torque Wrench Calibrations

+ -

We can calibrate Pneumatic (Air Guns) Torque Wrenches up to 3,000 lbf-ft (referenced to dynamic pressure).

Click-Type Torque Wrench Calibrations

+ -

Our lab can calibrate 6,500 lbf-ft for click-type wrenches.

Dial-Type Torque Wrench Calibrations

+ -

Ability to calibrate up to 6,500 lbf-ft for dial-type wrenches.

Torque Transducer Calibrations

+ -

Our in-house capabilities allow us can calibrate Torque Transducers up to 10,000 lbf-ft.

Torque Multiplier Calibrations

+ -

Our team can calibrate Torque Multipliers up to 6,500 lbf-ft.

Torque Screwdriver Calibrations

Torque Wrench Calibration Demonstration

Watch as lab technician, Ryan Werner, demonstrates how our lab calibrates click-type wrenches to ensure proper torque readings.

Our Torque Wrench Calibration Process

First, a highly qualified technician will first examine the equipment to look for any damages and defects that might prevent the unit from being successfully calibrated such as a cracked socket holder or a binding adjustment. It is then preloaded a minimum of three times prior to calibration, when changing the direction of the amount of torque force clockwise or counterclockwise, and after any repairs are made.

Next, the equipment is mounted to the loader at a level position while the handle is aligned with the reaction arm at the center point. The tech then performs calibrations at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% of maximum indicated range.

Verification

Finally, the wrench is verified in sequence from the lowest to the highest test points, in the same direction of the preload. The technician will take several sets of readings, and the torque generated is recorded on the data sheet. The “as found” test points must be the same as the “as left” test points while also matching the values on the manufacturer’s torque chart. Any units that do not align with manufacturer specifications are marked for repair.

The Importance of Calibrating Your Torque Tools Regularly

An uncalibrated torque wrench can yield vastly inaccurate loads upon fasteners, creating safety hazards in the workplace and other end-user environments that can have far-reaching consequences. The best way to avoid such circumstances is to establish a routine schedule for regular testing of all torque-based tools.
